Artist Statement
A Common Ground explores public safety as something created not only through institutions, policies, or enforcement, but through the relationships people build with one another. In this photograph, individuals stand hand in hand, forming a circle that represents unity, trust, reflection, and shared responsibility.
The image asks us to consider what safety looks like when a community chooses connection over isolation. Each person brings a different history, identity, and lived experience into the circle, yet they are joined by a common desire to protect, support, and be present for one another.
Public safety begins long before a crisis occurs. It is strengthened when people feel seen, when neighbors are willing to stand together, and when communities make room for healing, accountability, and collective care. A Common Ground captures a quiet but powerful moment in which safety is not being imposed upon a community—it is being created by the community itself.
