"The Queen Ascendant”
Artist Statement
“The Queen Ascendant” is a collaboration by Tracy Russ and Marcus Kiser. Drawing on the duo’s shared Charlotte native roots, Russ and Kiser fully reinterpret Charlotte’s Queen City identity as an economic mobility monarch. She is a transformative and ascendent figure – both a regal manifestation of the community’s history, and a crowned projection of aspiration for its future. She is literally and figuratively on the move into that future – in her way and on her terms. She is inspired by generations before her and inspires generations ahead as she builds new legacies of economic mobility and opportunity. During her reign as “The Queen Ascendant,” she will change how power is defined in the community. Long live the Queen!
