Arts and culture refers to visual art, music, theater, dance, literature, film, museums, festivals, public art, foodways, and cultural heritage. It encompasses the creative expression, traditions, stories, values, and shared experiences that shape how communities can build connections among their members.
Arts and culture can play a significant role in establishing and reinforcing our civic identity, economic growth, education, and social connection in a community. It can help communities preserve history, spark dialogue, inspire innovation, and attract residents, visitors and investment. In many cities, arts and culture is the seed of revitalization efforts, tourism, attracting and retaining a creative class, and neighborhood pride.
Cultural institutions such as performing arts centers and grassroots community organizations also create and foster spaces where we can gather, reflect, celebrate, and challenge ideas.
Research data consistently links arts engagement with improved educational outcomes, mental well-being, and a stronger sense of community.
Arts and culture can help define a city’s personality and quality of life. It shapes how a place is experienced emotionally, turning a city from simply functional into somewhere we feel connected, inspired, and proud to call home.

What is happening now?
Charlotte’s arts and culture landscape is growing along with the city.
Major institutions like Blumenthal Arts, Charlotte Symphony, and Discovery Place anchor the robust ecosystem, while murals, festivals, music, and grassroots creative spaces continue expanding across neighborhoods such as NoDa, South End, and Uptown. Newer developments like Camp North End help elevate arts and culture as part of their infrastructure through events, exhibitions, and storefronts dedicated to local artists.
Support for the arts comes from a variety of sources including the Arts & Science Council, the Infusion Fund from the City of Charlotte, private donors, and others. Yet widespread funding remains a challenge.
Charlotte launched a major evaluation of its creative landscape in 2021-22 amid rapid population growth, pandemic recovery, and racial equity conversations following protests in 2020, shifting public funding structures, and widespread concern that Charlotte’s arts identity was lagging behind economic growth.
The “Charlotte-Mecklenburg Arts and Culture Plan,” published in 2023, reflects comprehensive community input and has helped inform the community’s investments in the arts.
